CFP: E. E. Cummings Sessions at American Literature Association’s 27th annual conference
(deadline 1/15/2016; San Francisco, CA, May 26-29, 2016)

The E. E. Cummings Society will sponsor two sessions at the 2016 ALA. We invite proposals for papers on any aspect of Cummings’ life or work. Proposals on the following topics will be especially welcome:

  • Formal qualities of Cummings’ poems and prose, including manuscript studies, and especially papers exploring Cummings’ punctuation (marks, patterns, icons) and his note on “imitative punctuation (picture, image) vs. grammatical punctuation (sentence, thought idea)” (qtd. in Cohen, PoetandPainter 95).
  • Reading Cummings: “people stare carefully” / “And if i sing you are my voice,” We welcome abstracts on all aspects of reading Cummings, both academic and performative. For example, one might read or perform a favorite (singable, difficult, lyrical, perhaps even unreadable-aloud) Cummings poem and then comment upon it.

Submit 250-400 word abstracts to Michael Webster ( by January 15, 2016.
